Description
Get More Travel From Your 1st Gen Tacoma Rear Suspension
The factory rear shock location on the 1996–2004 Toyota Tacoma limits shock length, shock diameter, and usable rear suspension travel. We designed our 1st Gen Tacoma Outboard Shock Mount Kit to relocate the rear shocks outside the frame, allowing longer shocks, improved shock positioning, and significantly more rear suspension performance.
Moving the shocks outboard into the wheel wells allows the use of 10–12″ travel shocks with 2.0″ or 2.5″ shock bodies. The more vertical shock position also gives the shock better control over rear axle movement compared to the heavily angled factory location.
When combined with Deaver J59 leaf springs and Solo Motorsports extended shackles, this rear suspension setup is capable of approximately 12 inches of wheel travel with the proper shock configuration.
Why Our Tacoma Outboard Shock Mount Is Different
Not all Tacoma rear shock relocation kits are built the same.
Our upper shock mounts feature a fully boxed and plated design instead of a simple open shock tower. We designed the package to remain compact enough to leave room for hydraulic bump stops without modifying the shock mounts.
The lower shock mounts are also fully boxed and feature locating wings that wrap around the axle tube. This increases weld surface, simplifies positioning, and creates a stronger mounting structure for aggressive off-road use.
Built Around Your Shock Setup
The Solo Motorsports Tacoma rear shock relocation system works with most universal-style 10–12″ travel shocks and supports both 2.0″ and 2.5″ shock diameters.
For 2.5″ shocks, our optional Frame Notch Kit creates the additional clearance needed during full suspension articulation.
Optional limit straps, extended brake lines, hydraulic bump stops, and rear shocks allow you to build the system around your truck and intended use.
Whether you’re building a 1st Gen Tacoma prerunner, long-travel truck, or high-performance trail truck, this system is designed to let the rear leaf-spring suspension use the travel it’s capable of.

Shock Compatibility
Shock Travel: 10–12″
Shock Diameter: 2.0″ or 2.5″
2.5″ shocks require the Frame Notch Kit.
Piggyback reservoir shocks are not compatible.
Bypass shocks require the correct tube layout. Verify bypass tube configuration before ordering.
Important Installation Notes
- Negative offset wheel and/or wheel spacers are required for shock clearance
- Example: Truck in photos is running -10 offset wheels with 1.25″ wheel spacers
- Piggyback reservoir shocks are not compatible with this kit
- Bypass Shocks need a certain tube layout. Verify tube layout before ordering
- Example: King double bypasses style 2 is required
- Shock compatibility with 10-12″ shocks, and 2.0″ & 2.5″ shock diameter
- This kit REQUIRES Extended brake lines.
- To get the full amount of travel extended shackles are required.
