Get More From Your 3rd Gen 4Runner Rear Suspension
The factory rear shock location on the 1996–2002 Toyota 4Runner places the shocks at an angle in a tight area inside the frame. This limits shock size, makes shock service difficult, and prevents you from getting the most performance from an upgraded rear suspension.
The Solo Motorsports 3rd Gen 4Runner Outboard Shock Mount Kit relocates the rear shocks outside the frame and positions them more vertically. As a result, you can run longer, larger performance shocks while improving shock control and making future shock service significantly easier.
Why We Built Ours Differently
Not all outboard shock relocation kits are built the same. Instead of using a basic hoop and mounting tabs, Solo uses a fully boxed and plated upper mount design with locating wings. The boxed construction provides additional strength while keeping the overall package compact.
The compact upper mount also leaves room for a rear hydraulic bump stop system without requiring modifications to the shock mount.
Additionally, our lower shock mounts use a fully boxed design with a locating wing that wraps around the axle housing. This increases weld surface, helps position the mount during installation, and creates a stronger connection to the axle.
The system is designed around 10–12″ travel shocks in both 2.0″ and 2.5″ diameters. Moving the shocks outside the frame also opens the door to high-quality universal smooth-body and remote-reservoir shocks from several manufacturers.
For 2.5″ shocks, our optional frame notch kit provides the additional clearance needed at full suspension articulation.

Important Fitment Notes
Negative-offset wheels and/or wheel spacers are required to provide shock clearance. The 4Runner shown in our product photos uses -10mm offset wheels with 1.25″ wheel spacers.
Extended rear brake lines are required.
Piggyback reservoir shocks are not compatible with this kit.
Bypass shocks require the correct tube configuration for clearance. Verify bypass tube layout before ordering.
For vehicles using 2.5″ diameter shocks, the Solo Motorsports Frame Notch Kit is required.
Upgraded polyurethane-bushed or heim-joint upper and lower links and an upgraded panhard bar are highly recommended when increasing rear suspension travel.
